Holotropic Breathing

Holotropic Breathing - a description of the technique and training Articles

Holotropic breathingBehind the complex scientific term “holotropic breathing” hides a very effective breathing technique, allowing a radical solution to many problems of modern man.

The basis training on cold-tropic breathing lay the scientific development, underpinned not only theory but also practice.

Its authors were Kristina and Stanislav Grof Who formed a set of exercises holotropic breathing in the seventies of last century.

Despite the name, the breath – not the only “active principle” of the method. Music and special physical exercises are used as “background” to achieve a special state of consciousness. By the way, our trainings by this method are held in St. Petersburg and other cities in Russia.

The essence of the method

All experiences in our memory are grouped in a certain way. It might seem that they are a collection of disparate images. However, researches have shown that memories are “stored” in the form of complex functional complexes (SKO, in Grof’s terminology). Their peculiarity is that emotions and images are “sorted out” not by dates, but by their main “coloring. Such “central theme” can be fear, resentment, disgust or, on the contrary, joy, a feeling of happiness or even an ecstatic state.

Bringing to the surface, for example, RCTs that contain memories of something that once humiliated the individual, lowered his or her self-esteem or made one consider oneself a loser, one can effectively deal with all kinds of complexes. However, as practice has shown, the connection between the unconscious and the conscious is much deeper.

After holotropic breathing sessions, not only behavior may change (for example, a quiet and shy clerk suddenly shows pronounced qualities of a leader and becomes the soul of the company). Often there was an improvement in a person’s general condition – up to the disappearance of diseases described by official medicine as purely somatic.

Another result: the unblocking of psychosomatic energy “conserved” in RMS gives a tremendous boost to personal growth. The reason for this is quite simple: all of the memory complexes affect our perception, as well as our reactions to events in the world around us.

Neutralizing their negative impact, we dramatically reduce the number of own complexes and get the strength for further development. This has an immediate impact on communication with people around us, from the career sphere to the domestic sphere.

The influence of music

The basis of the technique is accelerated breathing (of course, carried out according to a special scheme). The musical background plays an enormous role here, allowing one to quickly tune in to the necessary emotions and setting a certain “rhythm” to the exercises. In this case, music is not just a passive component. It is it that helps a person in difficult moments to break through their own memories, not allowing to linger in the deadlocks of “hopeless” situations.

Of course, this rhythm of breathing and causes purely physiological changes in the body, affecting the biochemical reactions and physiological processes. But a huge part of the work in this case lies on the human consciousness – it brings to the surface and unites into a single whole the long lived emotions that do not give us peace (although we do not realize it).

What is the result of cold training?

  • The general tension subsides.
  • Unmotivated attacks of various negative emotions disappear: fear, uncertainty, melancholy, irritability. Consequently, the general condition of the person and relations with others improve.
  • Almost all phobias (fears) are overcome.
  • Without any medicines, stressful states and depressions pass, and, accordingly, problems caused by them disappear.
  • Not only external conflicts are overcome (it is possible to change jobs, after all), but also internal contradictions which underlie the processes of self-destruction of the psyche.
  • A very striking “external” result is a change in perspective on many issues. As perception changes, we begin to see ways of solving problems where before the situation seemed to be a dead end.
  • A tremendous amount of energy is released. Combined with other positive effects, this gives a powerful boost to a person’s development in any field, from personal relationships to career development.

Conclusion: this method is the way to harmony

The benefits of cold-tropic breathing have been proven by many years of practice and an enormous amount of documentary evidence. Moreover, in 1993, the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation officially recognized and registered it as one of the methods of psychotherapy. But it is necessary to use this technique carefully and correctly. It is best to attend the appropriate seminars and fully understand the method before starting to use it in practice.
